Open the files app on any phone and you will find the pile: Scan_0412.pdf, IMG_20260614.jpg, "New Document 7". Rent agreements, insurance policies, a passport somewhere. The paper made it into the phone. Its meaning did not.
The pile fails you at the worst moments. At the bank counter, asked for a policy number. At a visa portal, needing your passport expiry. During tax season, hunting one invoice from last September. The document exists. Finding it means opening PDFs one by one, squinting at scans, giving up, and asking someone to send it again.
Scanner apps did not fix this, because a scanner's job ends at the image. Nobody renames the file. Nobody types in the amount. Nobody files it into folders. Everyone means to, and nobody does, and the apps have always known it: that is why the filenames are timestamps.
The apps that do extract meaning mostly do it by uploading your documents to a server. For a shopping list, fine. For the exact papers you actually need help with, passports, ID cards, bank statements, that trade never sat right with us.
So we built Catadoc around two refusals: your documents do not leave the phone, and the app does not pretend the image is the product. Scan a receipt and it becomes a merchant, an amount, a date. Ask for "bills under 2000" in plain words. And when the paper defeats the reader, you fix the fact in one tap, and it stays fixed.
Paperwork is not going away. The pile can.
